Nice Photo Album of a Panzer Maintenance Unit

Not sure if those are balloon tires on the personnel carrier but they sure are big. Most of those photos were taken by the soldier in Italy. Too many for my friend DjPool to post (actually two photo albums). I'm not sure if anyone has noticed the Maintenance Berg Panther parked in the shed. Kinda rare and too bad you cannot see more of it. This Panzer soldier went on to join one of the 501st Heavy Tank units...unfortunately someone took out the photos of the unit at Sennelager in Album #2 . Bill

The vehicle is not a personal carrier exactly- It is a 18ton recovery vehicle known as a FAMO-(company that made them)- They were used to recover and tow tanks and such- they often were used in conjuntion with a trailer. It took two of these half tracks to tow a Tiger or similar sized tank.

I know Bill will read this, he may have the unit info. I didn't have time to write down the info.I just focused on scanning photos. His collection is endless! When we were in Germany he stored a lot of his photos in my collection room while he was relocating. I had them for several months and never got through them all. Jim

Photo 40 is quite remarkable in showing a 12t Zugmaschine with square-style "G" on definite 2-color camo scheme! (because this must be a 1942 or earlier photo)

It appears to me like a Truppenkennzeichen is painted between the rhomboid panzer symbol and "G". I would appreciate it if we can see the details here, Jim!

James, the photo does NOT show a 18t FAMO (but the trailer is Sd.Ah.116 as you describe in the drawing). This album shows many FAMOs, 12t, 8t and 5t.

My main point of refering to this was to show the trailer but I just assumed that was an 18t - I'll have to take a closer look... good eye!
