The writing identifies him as "Podpolkovnik Vitman" - I imagine it's August Wittmann, awarded the Knights Cross as Oberstleutnant (Podpolkovnik) on 21.6.1941 as Kommandeur Gebirgsartillerie Regiment 95 who went on to make Generalleutnant (info from www.dasRitterkreuz.de). Don't have a picture to compare though.

It's Generalleutnant August Wittmann who won his RK as James said.

              WOW!!! Help me on one....

Thanks Guys!! That's who I came up with afterall BUT James what area of the card indicated the guy's name?

I took the bottom left "area" as the name!

What is this fellow's name....I think I have this all turned around!!!

And, if possible will you interpret the card?

              Thanks

              Dave

                    Dave,

                    The first card is:

                    (Left hand side)
                    Serial number: (??) 3N242, SN 159
                    Date: (Blank)
                    Location: (Blank)
Source: Captured archive - Neveg (Possibly the German name Neuweg?)

                    (Right hand side)
                    Heading: IInd World War
Sub-heading: Officers of the Fascist Army
Content: Cavalier of the Knights Cross
                    Oberstleutnant Wittmann

                    The second one is:

                    (Left)
                    Serial number: (??) 3N242, SN 97,98
                    Date: (Blank)
                    Location: (Blank)
Source: Captured archive - Gipsk (not sure about the first letter)

                    (Right)
                    Heading: IInd World War
Sub-heading: Officers of the Fascist Army
Content: Cavalier of the Knights Cross
                    Oberst Burgdorf

In the serial number, SN stands for "picture" so the first part will probably refer to the album or section of the archive from which it comes.

Wilhelm Burgdorf was awarded the RK on 29.9.1941 as Oberst and Kommandeur Infanterie Regiment 529. He went on to make General der Infanterie (again, info is from www.das-Ritterkreuz.de).

His history gets a little sadder...apparently killed himself on May 5, 1945 in the Bunker, Berlin!

                        Thanks all!

Taking another look at the "Source" names, they might be straight renderings of the German names "Heber" and "Funck".

James, that's what led me astray!! However, I couldn't find a "Heber" but did find "Funk" who won the RK!

NOW, you have me wondering regarding "SOURCE" and could it mean the German source who identified the person in the photo???

                              Interesting...

                              James please keep going!!
