Interesting photo. I've never seen a picture of Faulhaber with the badge before. Did this come with a photo group? Any idea about time and location?

        Best regards/ Daniel

          close ups

          Hi
During the summer of 1944 Faulhaber's unit was stationed in Denmark. Faulhaber was quartered in a private home and this photo taken and gave it as gift to the danish family.
There were nothing else from Faulhaber among the photos I got from this family.

This is an outstanding find. Thank you for posting it.

Here is what I know , and don't know , on Markus Faulhaber:

All of the decorations shown were awarded while serving , primarily as Commanding Officer 3d Company, with 'Germania' 1938-1942.

Tactics instructor and AMT XI staff duties while assigned to Junkerschule Bad Tolz 1942-1944.

June-Sept 1944 'Kommandeur einer Kampgruppe im unternehmen 'Leuthen' eingesetzt'. This period has also been spoken as 'Commanding Officer SS Panzer Grenadier Brigade 49'. Your photo apparantly places this duty as being in Denmark.

Oct 1944 -April 1945 I believe at Junkerschule Tolz as there are photos of him as a field referee for tactics exercises during this period.

April 1945 Commanding Officer 95 SS Regiment 38th SS division 'Niebelungen'.

He died a very unfortunate and untimely death after the end of hostilities. Assisting the Americans in locating and helping the surrender of units in the Obersalzberg area , and being wounded in the arm , his vehicle , along with his aide-de-camp Oberstrumfuhrer Dalls, crashed into the Salzach River. Dalls survived , Faulhaber drowned.

What I do not know is :

What was , if anything , SS Panzer Grenadier Brigade 49 ? Anyone ??

The SS 'Leuthen' effort. There was a Hans Leuthen , but I know little of him. Apparantly an effort to form units , but I have not seen much research on this. The aforementioned German quote mentioning 'Leuthen' is from a FitRep written by Fritz Klingenberg June 1944 , so it did exist at that time. Thereagain...anyone ??

I hope that this assists you in rounding out the officer in your photo. Lastly, although you mentioned nothing else on Faulhaber from the Danish Family when you originally posted , nothing ?? For some of us this is just too good to go by without a thousand questions !

                  Respectfully

                  Camp Upshur
