    Photo's SS-VT Germania, Deutschland & Westland

    Hello,

On Wednesday, my birthday, I received a very nice photo grouping of a SS soldier, and wanted to share it with you guys.

    Name: Eugen Offtermatt
Date of birth: 12th of October, 1914
Place of birth: Korb, Kreis Waiblingen
    Rank: SS-Oberscharführer (Und Zugführer)
Units: SS-VT Germania, 1. Kompanie Regiment SS Westland SS-Panzergrenadier-Division Wiking, 1. Kompanie SS-Grenadier-Regiment Westland enz.
    Place of death: Perewisy
Date of death: 31 maart 1944
Awards: Among others the Eisernes Kreuz II Klasse, Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen, SA-Sportabzeichen.

Eugen, at right, is wearing a weird Ärmelstreiffen, and also wears a SA-Sportabzeichen.

    A nice photo of Eugen.

Photo of Eugen in SS sport outfit.

A possible SS flag at the flagpole?

Again a nice photo of Eugen.

Group photo SS-VT Deutschland, and ideas of the specific unit or commander?

Close-up of the above photo, interresting Ärmelstreiffen and "SS3" on the collar tab.

Maybe during a trip or something.

Wedding, Eugen Offtermatt standing on the third of right..

Same event as the above photo.

Exercises? On the shoulder tabs is the "D" symbol for SS-VT Deutschland. Eugen is manning the machine gun.

Again training. Eugen is now part of SS-VT Germania.

Eugen Offtermatt giving instructions during a training.

Some kind of trip. Eugen is at the far left.

Eugen, still with SS-VT Germania, maybe photographed during the invasion of Poland.

Maybe made on the same day as the above photo.

Eugen as a SS-Unterscharführer, wearing a Ärmelstreiffen and is wearing some kind of Schutzenschnur?

The wedding of Eugen Offtermatt and his wife!

Same event as the above photo.

Here is a close up of the wedding photo of Eugen and his wife.
It looks likes she is also wearing a badge!
Is there someone who could tell me which awards are included in the ribbon bar?
Also, it really looks like he is wearing two ribbons.

Again a photo of Eugen Offtermatt.

The "Gedächtnisfeier of Eugen Offtermatt, on the 28th of May, 1944.

Letter to Eugen's wife about his death on the 31st of March 1944.

      Hi,

      Nice B-day present

This picture is taken at the Orangery in Sance Souci Park, Potsdam. Google for "Orangery, Archer statue" and you get enough examples of modern pictures.

      Regards, Thomas

        Ss 1

Some of your pictures are from the early Politische Bereitschaft or Standarte 1, before unit was named "Deutschland" these are quite desirable to collectors dated to about late 1934-35 I would guess by the numbered cufftitle . Thank you for sharing it is a outstanding collection of photos to one man.

All of you thank you for you reactions!

          @ Thomas H

Thank you for identifying the location, I first thought of Walhalla because they had the same kinds of statue-heads there.
The photo has also a stamp on the back, with the location, Potsdam.

          @ Jim Toncar

Do you mean the first photo?

Yes, the first photo is the PB 1 standarte, early SS 1 collar tab and a numbered cufftitle.

Is there nobody who could tell more about his ribbon bar and his two ribbons? (one is EK II but looks there is a second one.)

Is there anybody who could provide more information regarding these units?
Furthermore, I am trying to write a letter to possibly one of the last relatives of Eugen, is someone willing to help me writing it?
Also, someone was arguing with me that Eugen was wearing the Deutsches-Reitersportabzeichen, but I think it's just the DRL-Sportabzeichen, Am I right or not?

                    With kind regards,

                    Koen.
