      I suspect it is just rubber-cemented waterproof PATCHES over a rip in the waterproof material.

        Weird, it almost looked painted on to me in the image. And, as Max pointed out, there appears to be no eagle on the cap. It could of course be in the fold.

            This reminds me of the smelly, icky, bicycle tire and tent patching kits of my youth, where the edging was supposed to seal the patch to the original material--

            note where flexing has caused the bottom of the lower patch to curl up.

              Thanks for your comments!

              At first sight he might look like a half vulcanese volunteer who was accidentally beamed down to Russia 1942, actually he's a German and from an independent artillery observer unit. The Swaz on his cap is only barely visible. The only other device that I can see is his bridal ring...

              I showed another image of him in <a href="http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18279">an earlier thread</a>:

              <img src="http://www.history.jp/images/HGM-Dia239.jpg">

              Unfortunately there is no more slides that show this "patch", I hope I had a few more so that I can find some conclusion out, but someone in the future may come across another photo for a more conclusive explanation!

                Insignia

                To me it looks like a unit insignia. Like the ones usually painted on vehicles etc.

                  I can't help with the insignia, but those are two very clear color photos.

                    Hello Akira, beutiful photos and before i say anything, i must add that your new web site layout is very impressive, congradulations.
                    Ok my two sence would be, i couldnt find any examples that looked likes the the insignia, could it be a invention of the regiment that he was posted to.

                    Im new at all this, but could a officer assign different color combinations to different groups within his formtion. ie, The Yellow and Whites would prepair ammunition, the Blue and Blacks would be spotting targets
                    Maybe this wasnt allowed in the german army for officers to be this creative but maye it was??

                    Hope this idea helps.
                    Regards.
                    Joshua

                      Thanks Joshua... Though I tend to think that "the patch" is actually a unit insignia, but I haven't been able to find anything so far... Maybe someone in the future can find something from his archive... Maybe I can... It's my hope... Posting something here will give the mystery a better chance to be solved, that's what I love about this forum!
