    Geschwader Immelmann or? Josef Wenigmann

I've been researching the RK Träger Josef Wenigmann, who was a Stuka pilot with the Grazer group and I/StG 3. Here's a question. In the Obermaier book on RK winners of the Stuka and Schlachtflieger, there is a biography and photo of Lt. Wenigmann. In the photo (for those of you who have the book) you can see that he's wearing a 'Geschwader Immelmann' sleeveband. I can't find any info about him ever belonging to StG2, so why the sleeveband? Either the biography is in error, or he borrowed someone else's tunic for the photo, or ?
Any info plus if anyone has any other documents or photos of Wenigmann would be extremely welcome!
    Thanks,
    Erich

    Very strange!

    Erich,

You´re correct! He is wearing an arm band from the "Immelmann" Geschwader (St.G 2). I have both prints of Obermaier book (the bilingual edition from 1976 and the German-only from 1988) and they have the same picture. I´m confused now!!

    Douglas.

      Immelmann sleeveband

      Hello Douglas,
I've got the earlier edition--the only other possibilities are that serving at the Stuka school 2 had some connection with StG2 (I can't find any connection, though) or that the photo is not Wenigmann.
Well, I do like a mystery!

I have a Soldbuch to a member of Grazer Gruppe. It was issued 26.8.1939 and the unit authorising the entries on page 2 is 2 Staffel, Stuka Geschwader 76 "Immelmann"

I will go and dig it out and provide a scan.....

Wenigmann starts military carier in the StG 168. This "Geschwader" was called Immelmann. Most of the members wear the Immelmann cuff title,

If you check the unit history....II./St.G. 162 "Immelmann" was formed 1.4.1936 in Lübeck-Blankensee. On 1.4.1937 it was redesignated I./St.G.167. This in turn was redesignated I./St.G.76 on 1.5.1939, still having the "Immelmann" title, however on 9.7.1940 when it became I./St.G.3 it appears to have been dropped!

Thanks! That makes sense, in a confusing way! I had been missing a few of the re-designations, but now I understand!
