Guys - I'm looking for some help with this doc group to an airman in KGzbV1. The group consists of his Czech Medal, EK2, Ostmedaille, Transport Clasp in Silver and EK1.
1. Questions about the EK2... it is interesting to see that although he was awarded as a member of KGzbV1, the award was rendered by KGzbV2 - it looks like it is signed by Oberst RĂ¼diger von Heyking. Was any part of I. Gruppe (KGzbV1) subordinate to KGzbV2 at this time (June, 1941)? The lexicon-der-wehrmacht states... "Im April wurden die I. und II. Gruppe beim Kampfgeschwader z.b.V. 3 in Griechenland". I wonder if that is a typo on the website?
I wonder if there is any chance that this award had anything to do the actions in Crete the month before?
2. Ouestions about the EK1... I want to assume he stayed with KGzbV1 through 1942. KGzbV1 was part of of Luftflotte 4 (Richthofen) during Operation Fall Blau and I Gruppe became a key unit during the attempt to resupply Stalingrad once it was surrounded in November. Based on the date of his EK1 doc, is it safe to assume this Unteroffizier was decorated for helping to supply the "Kessel"?
As always, any help is greatly appreciated.
