Signs read Dresden 75km , Bautzen 20 km, Gorlitz 24 km so I suspect it somewhere in between those three places.

Just a guess but I would say with those directions it would be in the Spremberg, Cottbus area. To the northeast of Dresden and north of Bautzen and Gorlitz.

I think it may well be Loebau. There was a Wehrmacht garrison there and the distances are about right, if measured from the edges of the towns, rather than the centres. The main Officer School for the East German Army land forces was in Loebau and was located in some very large old Wehrmacht barracks, so there will have been a major Wehrmacht garrison there, but I do not know which unit that would have been.
