I have a very powerful lupe. Although you cannot tell with the naked eye but a closer inspection with lupe shows no hakenkreuz within the claws of the diving eagle. There is however if you look closely what appears to be a bump at the top of the badge which appears to be another eagle that is distorted.
He sure looks to be a Gebirgsjaeger....mutze, jacket, boots! He also could have attended jump school much earlier either as Heeres Infantry , Gebj or possibly transferred to the mountain troops, also could be prior Heeres transferred to LW and then Gebj....many different possible variables. He may not have jumped into Norway or this photo was taken before Norway or this portrait taken before the jump into Norway which would explain why no Narvikschild.
Anyway I'm convinced that it is a Heeresspringerabz and to me that is all that counts.
