Is the photo simply a war-time portrait? The 1946 date on it is interesting as I would not expect many photos to be made at that time.

I found that "Trossführer" was a military function (not rank).
Here an example- have a look on the Sterbebild:

This guy was Stabsfeldwebel (rank) and also Troßführer (function) of a Field Division. Normally the "Tross" was responsable for transporting the supply and such things.
