Could someone help translate this paragraph for me?

I have run it through Google's translator but it's making very little sense.

It's a scan of an AH library book I have - the pencil underlinings possibly (probably) made by Hitler, so it will be interesting to see what caught his eye.

      Thanks and best wishes

      Chris

            Translation for post # 371:

Thus, from the sixth and seventh century onward, began that period in European history in which the state-building powers took over the leadership beyond the criteria of race, blood and soil. This already happened while the process of ethnic unification had not yet been completed anywhere. It was for this reason that the multi-ethnical universal idea - which, embodied by the Roman Empire, had dominated mankind for centuries - could become the principle for the order of continental coexistence.

              Translation for post # 372:

              It says:

              Frankreich
              Stukatrichter

              ...meaning:

              France
              Bomb crater from a Stuka

                        It says:

                        Gefr. [= Gefreiter] Hain
                        O'jg. [= Oberjäger] Hölzl
                        Jäger Caspar

That would appear be the names and ranks of the men in the photograph.

Jäger and Oberjäger were rank designations used in Mountain- and Jäger- [= light infantry] units. Jäger was the lowest enlisted rank while Oberjäger was the lowest Junior NCO rank. (Equivalent to Schütze and Unteroffizier, respectively.)
