Sdkfz. 6

Here's a pre war shot of an Sdkfz. 6 on April 30, 1939. When were these halftracks used? Were they used throughout the war? There appears to be a white mark in front of the driver, is it a unit marking? Hey who knew you could do wheelies in a halftrack?
