    As so often, a scan of the whole document may help to identify if we're looking for somebody in the Heer, KM, SS, etc., what unit, and what timeframe.

                According to the LdW links you've provided, Mauss was a Lt. Col as of 1 April 1941, and a Colonel during his leadership of Pzr Gren Rgt 33. I'm thinking it may NOT be him...

                  Hi Hank

                  You could be right.

                  It might be back to the drawing board http://www.dokumentenforum.de/thread.php?threadid=1205

                    You'd be looking for a battalion commander who was the designated deputy regimental commander.

                    4.Panzer Division had a lot of award holders but assuming "M" is the first letter I didn't see anyone as a potential match among my files (for GC, Gold Clasp, Honor Clasp).

                      Assuming "W" and "U";

                      II. Bataillon:
                      Major Hans Wüstner Aufstellung - April 1943 (gestorben)

                      He won the DKIG on April 24th, 1943 (posthumous award...?).

                        I sort of thought 2 upper marks in the signature (dot or Umlaut).

                        But just my eyes

                          The second mark would be the upper part of the "T"....

                            Any date of death? As this was signed - at the earliest - on the 15th of April, he'd have precious little time to sign...

                            And while a Sutterlin signature is a be-otch to decipher at times, I'm just not feeling "Wüstner"...but I could be wrong.
