I was wondering if anyone in the forum could enlighten me about the insignia worn by the soldier in this photo. It appears to be a Totenkopf emblem used by members of the 4th Cavalry Division but didn't the wearer also have to have the Branch Eagle on the Feldmütze as well? Was it common for the headgear to be worn this way?
The photograph was taken in 1943 according to the description on the back.
