Hallo everybody,
I am new to this forum. Akira introduced me to it as he was wondering about the odd document about Erich Olboeter's DKiG.
Over the last three years I researched SS-Aufklärungsabteilung 1 LAH, specificaly the career of Stubaf. Gustav Knittel. By now this resulted in a large file with all sorts of information about this man, but also about the unit and its men, resulting in a 250 + pages manuscript for a day-by-day unit history and a biographical file including over 300 members. I am in close contact with about a dozen former members of SS-AA 1 and also received help from the Knittel family. My files contain some original photos (and a lot of new prints) and no original documents, as I am not a collector of original docs. But I do have a lot of xerox copies of documents from BA-MA, NARA and from the collections of the veterans.
My request is: who has copies for me of documents related to members of SS-PzAA 1? I have a lot but I am allways looking for more.
About Olboeter: The document is questionable for various reasons.
First of all, according to the Kriegstagebuch of the LAH for March 1943, Olboeter was tranferred directly from the LAH to the HJ, together with Meyer and Bremer (plus the complete 1.(VW)Kompanie). Meyer, as allready stated by other visitors, was actually first send to the Panzertruppenschule. But if Olboeter was send to the SS-AA9 being formed in Neully-les-Champs after being wounded, how is it possible that he was there in a few days. He was with the AA LAH in Charkov for sure on the 21 March. It is impossible to be in France five days later.
Second, most serious sources state that Olboeter was awarded the DKiG on 21 March 1943 and that he received the medal on 30 March (Scheibert: "DKiG träger der Waffen-SS"). Thus the given 26 March is a miracle.
But on the other hand: given this information, why would a forgerer make a document that states that a well known officer from LAH was with Hohenstaufen, and give an incorrect date?
I will contact somebody who was with 5./AA LAH at Charkov and try to get a definitive answer. I'll come back on this later.
Regards,
Timo
