Any idea what time this picture was taken - summer 42?

If I'm not wrong this division had been destroyed in Stalingrad. If so photos must have been taken in spring or summer 42 .

Are you sure they are using them? they look to be left behind by the Russians.
I'm sure the Germans would at least have put on a national flag (the swastika one) for their own plane's to reconize... or some balkenkreuzen painted on the sides.

The divisional insignia is on the turret of the lead tank - but perhaps it was a trophy mark for a couple of killed KVs? In any case, the image appears pre-Stalingrad...although it is possible that this was taken after the Division was reformed and sent back to the eastern front in late '43.

I believe the Divisional emblem on the turret was used for the reformed unit after being destroyed at Stalingrad. The earlier emblem used the jumping horse instead of the bar.

The simplified divisional sign was the "official" sign of 24 PD from the time of its formation but they continued to use the old 1 Cav Div sign at the same time. The KV with the 24 PD sign is probably a tank knocked out/captured by the unit on the way to Stalingrad. Alan
