Hi guys,
Does anybody recognise this Ritterkreuzträger? Apologies for the appaling quality... I only have this photocopy until I receive a hi-res scan from Bundesarchiv. This image will be used in my forthcoming photo volume about Stalingrad, so I need to find out who he is. Here's what I can tell you about the photo:
• It was taken in early September 1942. Also on this roll are photos of General Heim wearing a Knight's Cross (which he was awarded on 30 August 1942). Other photos on the roll show the outskirts of southern Stalingrad, so the photo was definitely taken after 30 August but before 13 September 1942.
• The unknown RKT was in a unit subordinated to Kempf's XXXXVIII. Panzerkorps (must be one of the following: 14. and 24. Pz.Div., 29.Inf.Div.(mot) and 94.Inf.Div.).
• Unknown RKT has rank of Hauptmann. It's difficult to determine his Waffenfarbe... could be white, gold, pink, etc, but I don't this he's from the Panzertruppen.
• The fact that a PK photographer took 4 photos of him suggests that the RK has been freshly awarded.
Because Heim and other 14.Pz.Div. officers appear on the same roll, I presumed this unknown RKT also belonged to this division. However, I cannot find a good candidate from that unit, or from 29.Inf.Div. Also, I don't think he's from 24.Pz.Div., as I'm quite familiar with that division. That leaves 94.Inf.Div. and the best candidate from that unit is Hauptmann Wilhelm von Hagen, Führer II./Inf.Rgt.267, awarded RK on 2 September 1942. Von Hagen was born in 1912, making him 30 at the time of the RK bestowal. Unfortunately, I cannot find a picture of von Hagen anywhere.
Anyone have any input?
Thanks
Jason
