Maybe it's the scanner or something, but it looks like the first picture has had the Ritterkreuz photoshopped on the photo! Maybe the angles are strange or something.

Dear Mansal: Yes the RK is added into the photo later. This was commonly done by the photostudio/press to update photos they had of the recipient when it would be too difficult to obtain an up to date photo (with new awards). You can also see this on photos of individuals who received awards but were killed shortly afterwards and a photo of them with the new award was never taken.

Yes. Geisler it was. There is a Bundesarchiv pic with the same bespectacled officer on the left hand side.
