Perry/Woods/Butler list a Benkendorff without a first name as being credited with 12 aerial victories while flying with JG 3, but this may not be the same person - is it possible that he might have been with JG 3 before switching from fighters to Stukas?].

I do know that Herr Benkendorff served as an instructor with Sturzkampffliegerschule Insterburg in 1940/41. Like so instructors at that time they were sent to front line units.

The Benkendorff with JG 3 was a Leutnant in 1942, Helmut Benkendorff was an Oberfeldwebel.
