You're right, those are nice period sigs. BTW his name is spelled Schmeling.

The old guy that used to live next door to my sister in law was Schmeling's sparing partner for the 1936 Olympics. He had hundreds of photos of the Olympics and himself with Schmeling. The really interesting aspect was that he was actually barred from attending the Olympics because he was Jewish. Unfortunately he died a couple of years ago and there's no telling what his son did with the photos. I spent a great afternoon talking with him and how his family made almost a "Sound of Music" escape from Germany. The really strange aspect was that he had a beautiful dagger that his grandfather won in the national pistol championship as an officer in the German Army during WWI. How times change.

              Paul,

His sparring partner was Jewish...not Schmeling. Max did become a Fallschirmjaeger and participated in the jump into Kreta.

There is a note you can see in the last picture that says that the ticket is given as a gift to one of 2 boys that must have impressed someone up the distribution line with their enthusiasm for boxing as they seem to have planned to get to the event by bike......real fans I´d say

I remmember reading that Schmelling was not a party member and actually was outspoken about the treatment of the Jews before and after the war. He was a paratrooper.

I read that Max HAD TO became soldier BECAUSE his political opinion. Is it correct?

He was member of 4./FJR3. There were more popular and famous men in FJR 3 ... olympic winners and so on ( Rudolf Harbig etc).

                          regards

Thanks, Torsten. I have never come across something like that before,if people were fans of something in those days they seem to have rarely kept their memorabilia. To finish off I have 2 pics of the 2 boys the cards were for
