    More ebay "fake" photos?

Well, maybe "fake" isn't the best word. Post-war copies apparently from seller "ordenolli". I bought the HG portrait pictured below. A fairly inexpensive lesson, at least. Subsequent pics are comparisons of the photo edging on other pics he has for sale or has sold. I overlapped other photos with mine, so just the top edge of the HG photo is showing.

One question I have is: Is it unusual to find such perfect correlation on the photo borders? Is this something to look for when trying to distinguish period photos from otherwise?

    Regards,
    Kevin

yes, he is a regular seller of repos, but it is obvious that they are repros.
Also ask yourself, are you really going to get a nice Herman Goering cufftitle photo for less than 75-100 Euro ?
          Not these days.

If you have experience and know the subject then it is still easy to buy good original photos. The fakes are still very obvious.

the problem is that the same pictures are re-sold later by other dealers, on Ebay, and without mentioning they are repros.

Here's a seller without the smiley but with the same ORWO description: http://cgi.ebay.de/PORTRAIT-FOTO-2-W...QQcmdZViewItem

Altes Portraitfoto wohl Nachkrieg auf ORWO Wolfen Fotopapier

OK, upon looking at that link, I would be immediately be scared off by the overly yellow appearance and the unusual edging pattern.

To the best of my knowlage, this seller clearly indicates that these photos are post-war reprints.

Here is what the seller writes:

Altes Belegfoto wohl Nachkrieg auf ORWO Wolfen Fotopapier - kein Fotopapierhersteller, Rückseite mit Stempel, Fotoformat 10 x 14 cm.

Here is a rough translation of that:

Old record photo probably after war on ORWO wolfs photo paper - no photo paper manufacturer, back with stamp, photo formats 10 x 14 cm.

The seller is clearly not trying to "Fake" out anyone. If you are going to "roll the dice" on a non English speaking web site then you need to do your homework.

Take a look at the sellers current listings, pictures going for 16.00 Euros!

ORWO Wolfen was the main communist East German photographic factory. The trade name ORWO was only introduced in 1964 and stands for Original Wolfen and so, any photos printed on ORWO marked paper are guaranteed not pre-1964. Cheers, Torsten.

You are correct in that it is somewhat a "trap" for non-German speakers who buy these photos without knowing what they are getting into. There are unfortunately many black sheep who print onto old paper and then sell these as originals. I remember a well known Austrian here, who I have also seen in the US selling "original" photos and photo albums at some shows. This same person attempted to purchase a large SS negative collection of a collector here as his images were "running out". That is the problem with purchasing images without guarantee or over the internet. There are still a lot of excellent, unknown negatives out there so at least learn what you are bidding on and exercize more caution.

                            Kevin,

It appears that Tom Johnson was "Faked out" as well. Turn to page 26 of his hard bound World War II German War Booty book.

It looks like this "Luftschutz Hottie" gets around........
