Sorry, this letter explains not why he won the KC - it is just written by some commander of his homeunit to his parents, asking to forward their congratulations to their sons´ current adress, as they do not know in wich hospital he lies.
Over half of the letter explains the situation / history / kind of his several woundings, the transport to diff. lazaretts, and so on.

      Quick translation:
As you probably heard of your son winning the KC from papers and radio, you must be full of joy.
He demonstrated his soldierly qualities in a number of earlier battles. It's not surprising his many brave acts culminated in award of the KC.
We're sad that due to his wounds, he couldn't receive the KC with his comrades.
Despite many wounds, he stayed as long as he could with us. After he suffered frostbite to his feet on 22 Feb, he was sent to an evacuation center.
We hope he gets well soon, as his wounds weren't too serious. But we don't know his current address, and can't congratulate him.
We're sure he wrote to you.
      Please send our best wishes.
Our entire unit looks at him with pride. Being from Graz myself, I'm especially proud.
      Again, many greetings and congratulations.

      That's a real quick translation.

      best
      Hank
