A dark chapter in Holland.... "Jews Forbiden"

Hello,

I would like to share the following sign with you. I'm not sure how the proclamation came down or by whom, but in 1942 the Dutch Police required that businesses such as theaters, clubs, restaurants, shops, etc. place a sign stating "For Jews Forbiden" and other anti-semetic messages.

The following was picked up in Holland in 1944 by a US Vet. It is very, very fragile and was issued in Arnhem by the Dutch Police.
A sad chapter that most toleratered, but did not agree with the policies of the NSB.

very nice and fragile item, how did you find the era photo with the example in use? That is a very important way to understand how the item(sign) was used.
I imagine these signs sat in the rain! not too many around I would think(well the ones in parks).

Thank you, yes the item is probably only one in a handful that still exist today. I've only seen one other, in mint condition, from City of Amsterdam. The image is from one of the many holocaust sites that unfortunately cannot give credit, but as it is being used in this manner I think ok and much appreciated. I am glad that the image shows how and where these things were placed in public locations. The first real sign that things were going to get much worse before much better for the Jews!

I can only imagine the history that unfolded in front of the sign, and the terror the Jews must have felt when they were first encountered one.

Operation Market Garden, on to the tearing down and being thrown in the streets or the trash, then at some point being picked up by some US Vet who obviously saw the importance of savng such an item back then.

I am humbled by owning it, but feel as my small collection would not be complete without it and I'm glad to share it here.

Nice historical sign you show us here.

They aren't that rare, although one doesn't see them that often.
Interesting background that the one you show us was taken home by a vet.
Those signs were used through the entire war.

Cardboard or paper version for Theather, Cinemas, Clubs, Restaurants, Bars, Shops, Schools, Libraries, Swimming Pools, Trains and other Transport, etc.

And for in the outside areas a wooden version for Public Parcs, Swimmning pools etc.

Just to keep the Jews away from all public life.

SMV is it please possible to see the rest of the KZ document that is hidden behind your sign ?

The foto that Akira shows us is an excellent example of the "Racial War" propaganda, not to mention a rare image of the Hermann Goering Panzer Regt.

Erwin, I am sure you are correct about these being placed behind glass as well as hundreds of other places, as Eric~Jan say's, "To keep Jews from all public life." Ordinary daily tasks such as taking a rail or buying groceries would have been near impossible without the aid of the non-Jewish Dutch folk.

Eric~Jan, here are some fotos of the KL Flossenburg document.
I do not know much about it other than it appears to be transport and entry file on a Dr. Paulo Sforzini, a "Lung Specialist" who must have survived his relatively short stay at the camp. I do not know why he was
taken from Milano to Germany and incarcerated so late in the war.
I wonder if it had anything to do with him being a physician.
