I hope somebody on the forum can identify the to me unknow SS-officer on the left. Maybe somebody can read the name(s) on the back of the photo?

In the list of the Volksbund there are only two soldiers KIA with the family name Elmenreich:
Hermann Elmenreich * 1923 + 1943 Russia
and
Karl - Friedrich Elmenreich * 1883 + 1945 Ketschendorf near Halbe, Germany in a (POW ?) Camp.
But I think both do not fit because of their age, the first is too young, the other too old.

During the Western Campaign, collar tabs (which at that time bore not just the SS runes, but additional unit cyphers as well) were ordered to be removed for security reasons. The photograph is probably from that period or shortly afterwards.Originally posted by holz21pz View PostComment

Reinhard Ellmenreich and Adolf Diekmann were serving as officers in regiment "Germania" in 1940. Just another possibility.

It's definitely Reinhard Ellmenreich. John Moore includes another photo of him, from the same sequence, in his book Signal Officers of the Waffen-SS. Ellmenreich won the EK I in August of 1940, so this photo is after that date. That could well be Adolf Diekmann, later infamous for Oradour, next to him.
Edited to note that in Moore's photo the EK I is more visible, while his head is only slightly moved from the pose here. The two photos were obviously taken within seconds of each other.Comment

It is good to know that both officers were ID'd in the end!
I do know what happened to Adolf Diekmann, but know little about Reinhard Ellmenreich. Wasn't he involved in the 1945 fighting in Prag?

My information comes from Moore's book, which has a biography of Ellmenreich. He commanded the radio company of Nachrichten Abteilung Wiking upon formation. In October 1942, he briefly took command of the entire battalion, but became ill, and was evacuated.
Beginning in late November 1942, Ellmenrich headed training/instructional commands. His last command was converted into an infantry battalion at the end of the war, after being based in Czechoslovakia. So he did indeed fight in the last days of the war in Bohemia, or in northern Austria.
Ellmenreich survived, and died on May 15, 1966. His son joined the modern German Navy, and eventually commanded two surface ships.Comment
