I am glad you liked the photos. And yes in 1944 they had every right to be afraid of the Russian airforce, so these zelts sure cam in handy.

The two Brigadeführers in #20 were Franz Augsberger (20 WGrSS Div) and Joachim Ziegler (11 SSPzGr Div)

Not a few copies are around, and I think they are from one source - he had many duplicates. Not original? Maybe, but possibly just duplicates. There were many reasons to make multiple copies from such an important event.

Nice pictures. #1 & 14 seems to show Ziegler who was a former member of the PzGruppe Drohne during Spanish civil war.
Could you make a better scann of the #14?

By the way Peter, the lines on the scans are from your scanner (or jpeg noise), right? The pictures are originally bad but not that bad.

some better ones, like #29, can be enlarged like this.

Does anyone know the origin of these photos ? Kriegberichter or not ?

Some of them are good shots them others particulary those of Gunther Wanhofer are of poor quality !!

I have been talking to the owner of the photos and he has showed me these. Can anyone tell me if you think it's period or if they are post war. There seems to be no writing on the back unfortunately, which leaves it a bit more up in the air. I'll let you all decide.

Hi Mansal, "1a" is the designation for Chief of Operations. The other wording is his name "V" being for "Von".

Several of these are in my "Nordland" volume of equal or maybe better quality, as well as the Korps "Steiner" history via Ertel. 1 of the Ziegler photos is the most well known of him, but others I had not seen. When I exchanged with Ertel he only had a few of them, so perhaps some were PK photographer's work and some were private. Photos of Wanhofer seem to be very few, even the ones he had were poor quality.

He was only given SS rank (Standartenführer) on November 9, 1944, but was allowed to wear the uniform of an Obersturmbannführer before that even though not a member of the Waffen-SS.

The full length data on him in my "Nordland" book is too long to fit in a posting.<o></o><o></o> Being only interested in images for books, period or print is not a value factor for me. But I would ask those here who know the subtle ways to determine if prints are done period, postwar, etc. before paying a lot if they are claimed to be period prints with prices that reflect that.<o></o><u4></u4><o>

The German Cross in Gold has nothing to do with the award of the Knight's Cross, or the reverse. The KC is a progression of the Iron Cross. The GC is an Order (War Order of the German Cross) unto itself. Having one didn't get you the other before or later in any type of sequence. A lot of KC holders did not get the GC and some got it after the Knight's Cross. Kausch was recommended for the Oakleaves but had still not been recommended for the German Cross, for example.

The KC would be awarded for a single engagement or battle. The GC was for multiple engagements, normally at least 4 but 5-6 being the norm. I've seen a few recommendations with considerably more than that. Of course my knowledge is only in SS awards, the general practice for the other services is out of my experience area.
