The last wound entry in the Wehrpaß lists 'Artillerie Geschoß', yet Otto's comrades writes 'Yes and then it happened...a Russian machinegun fired from the flank...10m behind I heard Otto Bar groan.'

Unless I'm reading something wrong (entirely possible), this sounds to me like Otto's wound came from an MG not Artillerie - no? Which brings me to the crux of the question - what did Otto die from MG fire or Artillerie?

    Hi John;
The Wehrpass entry says: "li. Becken durch Art. Gesch. südwestl. Kamary"

(wounded) left (side) pelvis (caused) by Artillery fire, south-west of Kamary.

There is an entry just below that I can not read because your John M Donovan stamp is over it, perhaps you could post another scan of that section.

The Wehrpass entry would be based on the findings of an Army physician - and should be correct.

It is entirely possible that while the MG had pinned down the group they came also under fire by Artillerie. His comrade only states that the wounded could not be moved until the MG was eliminated.

Hardy - I Agree 100% It's most probable that he was injured by both enemy machinegun fire and artillery fragments. Regardless, one - or both - resulted in his death.

Spectacular grouping, John! Nice to see you took the time to do some in depth research, too. I've really enjoyed reading through this thread.

Congrats, and thanks for sharing this with us.

I see what you're talking about John, missed that. Maybe a bit larger scan of that last entry would help, just to verify.

Unless it was nighttime, or the weather was bad, and you were running out of gas - then it was a sweaty nightmare, like a monkey f*ing a skunk.

            Hi Guys-

Thanks for the compliments and additional commentary...

The last/covered-up Wehrpass entry reads "infolge Verwendung gestorben' - Died as a result of wound.

Can anyone confirm the authorizing stamps from post # 16 are, in fact, not 3rd Reich era, but Weimar/Imperial?

            Thanks,
            John

                  Hi Angel-

                  No, not worried

The stamps are for the correct Wehrbezirkskommando, I'm just curious if they are Weimar or Imperial...
