Engel was a Geschütsführer in the 2./Stug.-Abt. active in the operational area of the 3. GebirgsDiv. His unit encountered heavy Soviet armour in the area to the North of the Sea of Azov and South of Saporoshje. Engel and his crew accounted for 20 Soviet tanks when his unit counter-attacked a Russian breakthrough.
