The photo is supposed to be taken on Crete.

Is that the III Gruppe JG 54 emblem?

If it is the unit was never stationed on Crete.

Hi there!

On the cowling there's the emblem of III gruppe of the Jg27, and under the canopy there's the 8° staffel 'hand'.

Hi, again!
The shield of the III gruppe of the Jg54 have the same drawing, but is on red 'field', instead of the Jg27's white background. The rest is the same.
The presence of Jg27 in the mediterranean theatre is more correct, and the pic should be take at crete. On 23 March 1942 the III Gruppe (hand in circle embleme, the same on your pic) of JG 27 sent a small detachment to Kastelli, in the famous island.
