This is a photo of Heinz Rieck. It was taken in Brest,France in 1943. He served on the U-731 and lost his life aboard her when she was sunk on May 15, 1944. Could someone tell me his rank? I believe that he's an obergefreiter. What would someone of that rank do aboard the boat? Also, what were the rules regarding receiving the submarine badge? As can be seen in the photo, Heinz does not have his submarine badge. There is some writing on the reverse of the photo. I'll put up that part of the photo as well and hopefully one of my fellow board members will be able to translate it for me.
