were talking about 1944, not 1949. The 1944 national title was won by Dresdner SC (4:0 over Luftwaffen SV Hamburg).

I know nothing about Football I think I have made the mistake of thinking that they were overall winners, when they were actually divisional champions.

correct, the team was Dresdner SC with Helmut Schoen in it and some other famous footballers, but I just cannot find a team photo anywhere ....
