Do anyone know who this U-boot commander can be? Is it possible that this is the first commander on U-625 Kptlt. Hans Benker?

Tor , a great photo - it appeals to me on several levels .
U-625 - a connection with my own neck of the woods - sunk by a lough Erne based Sunderland , in March 1944.
( The captain of the Submarine actually signaled to the circling Sunderland "Fine bombish" as the crew took to the life rafts.
Sadly the entire crew was lost - the Sunderland had contacted naval forces to rescue the crew but a storm moved through the area that night and all were lost.
Castle Archdale did send aircraft to the area the next day to try and locate surivors but nothing was seen.
I have always felt rather sad about the loss of this boat and her crew - the Sunderland did drop items to help the German crew - a life raft and ratons - from both sides a degree of humanity and respect.
Such a waste .....
Secondly the binoculars - have to love them .
Thirdly Norway - U-921 shot down a 422 RCAF Sunderland on 24th May 44 - and minutes later was attacked by an aircraft from the sister Squadron 423 RCAF .
One of the 422 crew (Sgt.Claude Senton) was washed ashore on Norway and the 423 crew was later killed in crash near their base.
( The Captain of 921 was killed in the act of saving his command nad her crew - he closed the harch from the outside after having ordered her down. Wolfganag leu recieved no recognition for this , not a single word).
By way of interest the aircraft which sank U-625 - photographed over Lough Erne the day following the sinking of 625.Attached FilesLast edited by behblc; 10-18-2007, 06:04 AM.
