How to remove ink that hides the swastika on a picture?

Hi everyone,

I have a question. Is there a way that I can remove this ink from the picture, without removing the swastika that is underneed it?
If there is no 'good' way to do this, should I then leave it like this, or make it clean (also removing the swas probable) and then paint a new swas on it?

Maybe you have a suggestion what I can do best with it.

Don't take any chances of ruining a double RKT photo. Hiding the swaztika is an equally historical aspect of living with it in Germany.

I'm just a firm believer in not altering 'inherited' things.

Hi Tony,

The last thing I want is to ruining the picture, but although the hiding swastika is also an historical aspect I don't want it on pics or docs!!! When you look at the picture, you will automatically focus on the blue spots and you will still see part of the swastika and if not we all know what was there.

Your comment did help me and I decided not to use any chemicals.....but....I did something with it. I just used a tissue and some water and got some of the ink off .

This picture has a good size to frame it; size is 24cm wide and 17cm high. On it are 4kc-holders, 3 of them fallen, in less than 4 months time!

Why not photo shop it and have a duplicate? Of course the 'untouched' one would be a modern reprint, but atleast it wouldn't have blue ink spots and you'd also still have the original.

Yes maybe I should just use Photoshop and frame the copy. I than also don't have to worry about light and use cheap/normal glass in the frame.

I copy a lot of my original photographs.I keep the originals in an archival file and i frame and display the copies..

On this picture you can see the commander of the II. group (Wittmann)with his squadron commanders.

From left to right:

Olt Dietrich Kornblum, RK 09-06-1944, gefallen am 27-11-1944 (age 22)
Olt Heinz Zoellner, RK 05-04-1944, gefallen am 05-11-1944 (age 24) His Beobachter that died with him was Ofw Karl Christmann, RK 05-04-1944 (age 32) They got the RK together and died together.
Major Herbert Wittmann, RK 23-11-1941, Oaks 11-02-1945 (still with us, age on picture 30 years)
Olt Johann Dreher, RK 05-04-1944, gefallen am 04-03-1945 (age 24)

Maybe it's the stress of war or living in the Third Reich, bad early nutrition, or who knows...but don't these guys LOOK much older than their age? The only exception might be Dreher on the far right.

I agree with you, Tony. It´s been the first thing that has caught completely my attention. I think that their faces speak volumes about the pains of the war... People look always older to me, as if the war had left a hard imprint on them.
