German handwritten translation & tactical symbol help.

I need translation help with following handwritten German text

I know these Tactical symbols, but what does V.G. stand for? Map is from the Stalingrad battle in 1942. The 389th ID was not a Volks Grenadier unit and note the LI Corp has V.G. behind it also! It very likely these are ordnance related. Any help?

Hmmm, i was thinking that if the map had been later the V.G may have had something to do with the units being remnants.

Hi Russ

In pic #5 the top and bottom flags are Division HQ flags. Middle one possibly the same or Brigade HQ.

The top flag has a circle on top with a wavy line comming out of it. This is the panzer troop symbol.

So it could read as Divisional HQ of 14 Panzer Division which I believe fought
at Stalingrad at this time.

Middle flag also has tank or panzer symbol above it.

You are correct in iding the symbols as divisional HQ's, and yes they all fought at Stalingad, its the V.G. abbreviation thats vexing Russ.

The others are Infantry Divisions and Corps symbols

Managed to get the following, leading on from the PM i sent you last night. hope its useful


"Vorausgruppe", the advanced echelon of the division or corps in the process of arriving in that command. Both of these symbols are depicted without filling, which probably indicate units not fully there.

If we could find out the exact positions of the parent units we might be able to figure out if indeed the ones on your map are Vorausgruppe.

I agree with this conclusion and it fits other scenarios show on the map including movement by HQ of the 24th Panzer and 100th Jäger Division. Note the old grease pencil location of the LI Corp. (Top)
