Schwere Artillerie-Abt. 842 was formed 3.2.1941 by renaming IV./Art.Rgt. 253 (Wehrkreis VI), that had been set up a year before on 26.1.1940 (3 batteries of 10-cm field guns (mot.)). It was reorganized and renamed Festungs-Artillerie-Abt. 842 in August 1944.
Classification and Employment: Heerestruppe (GHQ troops); Russia 1942 assigned to AOK 2 (Heeresgruppe B) in the Don Bend sector, Voronezh; 1943 Kharkov, Zhitomir; July 1944 Brody, Lvov; 1944-45 assigned to AOK 17 and deployed in the Vistula Bend; last in Oberschlesien (Upper Silesia) under Pz.AOK 1.
Replacement Depot: II./253 in Düsseldorf (Wehrkreis VI).
