U-A (type Batiray) was being built for the Turkish navy when the war broke out. She was taken over by the Kriegsmarine, at first she was known as "Optimist" but then was given the designation U-A.
She took part in the invasion of Norway. U-A carried out 8 patrols to the northern, central and southern atlantic. Sunk 7 ships for a total of 40.706 GRT and damaged another ship. One of the interesting things is that she was part of the rescue operation carried out in south atlantic to rescue the crew from Atlantis and Python.
In 1942 she was removed from combat duty and was destined to train new crews.
She was scuttled in Kiel on the 3rd of May 1945

indeed the cannon seems to have been removed. maybe it caused too much drag or was removed to speed up the diving time. another thing I can think of is that it was a poor firing platform. But those are only hipothesis.
the only modification I can see to the conning tower is a wave deflector on the forward part.
nice to see you here too!
