    Ship Name Mystery! Please help.

This is doing my head in so I'm beggin the forum for some help.

I got a rather interesting and in this case poignant photo.

On the far right is part of a U-boat crew figure looking out at a life boat with survivors coming up presumably to be rescued.

This picture was part of a collection from an officer who served with u-38 and u-172 so it is probable that the u-boat picked up these survivors from a kill.

The only readable text appears on an officer in the jolly boat, and its not very readable. I have enhanced it to assist you.

Now the list of kills from u38 and 172 are below. Likely candidates IMHO are bolded:
    • ATHELKNIGHT
      CITY OF ALMA

I'd say the last letters are probably INIR ?

Hmmm..... really not sure, can't see any of the highlighted ships names being the one in the photo.
      IMHO:
The last letter is an 'A', 'B' or an 'R'.
2nd last a 'T' based upon the spacing between the adjacent letters.
      3rd last an 'N' or an 'R'.
      4th last an 'I'.
      5th last a 'P' or an 'R'.
and the letter nearest the arm a 'T'.

Adrian & Tim, did a search on all your combinations in "uboat waffe"

        http://www.ubootwaffe.net/ops/shipindex.cgi

a few came up but nothing really conclusive, I think we may have too many "T" 's
