Excellent photo and real Edelweiss! But I think if you look closely at his shoulder boards, you will notice that he is an NCO and not an officer. NCO's could wear Officer Litzen instead of EM Litzen with Tresse.

If he was an NCO would there be silver piping around the collar?

Looks like a Hauptmann to me with regimental number in between the pips.

Have you tried enlarging the area of the shoulder straps to see if you can make out any of the numbers on there?
