The photo you're asking about is from a series of five or six photos, all rather grisly, of murdered Poles in the Polish district, apparently where the "American Concentration Camp" banners were placed on street corners. The reports accompanying these photos are not clear on who killed these people - Americans or Germans or other Poles. The text simply refers to the dead as "murdered Poles" and states, as I recall, that the deaths were being investigated.

This occurred at a time when there was an uprising against U.S. troops from the Poles, apparently, and there are other photos showing G.I.'s with M-1 Garands looking none-too-happy and standing before some large crowds on these streets. Also photos of what is apparently a Soviet flag hoisted over the Polish district and another photo of an American solider making a civilian take the flag down at gunpoint.

I'd never heard of any of this until I discovered these books. I read most of the reports on this when I got these books, but as I recall, there are not a lot of details about who did what to whom or what caused the riots in the first place.

Superb information for anyone interested in the history of the city. Thank you.

Thanks for the information - that is fascinating. I, like Max, have a wife that comes from Bremen and her family still lives in the area. Her Mom was a little girl during the war and still remembers the air raids and running to the shelter (which still exists)...great info - look forward to seeing more.

                      Best Regards,

                      Pete

It's not the shelter in Rablinghausen Landstrasse by any chance?
                        Max.

I find this one of the most interesting posts in a long time. Something I've never heard before. You really have got something historically fascinating there.

I'm sure the local museum would love to have a look at these items ( have them pay for scans ) but fascinating stuff all the same.

Pay for scans? I'm sure they didn't cost a fortune, so maybe give them copies.
