Hi,

According to http://niehorster.orbat.com/011_germ...s_figures.html it is the symbol for Feldwebel.

Cheers,
Larry

Thanks for your reply, looks like the cross
over circle symbol I am interested in is not
the one used on WW2 German maps - here
is what I am trying to identify, an odd flag.

No, the circle with the cross above (like in the first picture posted) is the symbol for a Leichtverwundetensammelpunkt. (staging area for lighty wounded)

best regards

Hello Maigewitter:
Thanks for your interesting map use answer. What
about as a 3rd Reich organization emblem, as shown
in the black flag photo? Cross on same has non-square
ends, which may be significant?

Hello

There were different types of symbols in different levels of display.
On a map the circle with the cross is as said a Leichtverwundetensammelplatz while in a company diagram it is a NCO of the rank group "O" (Feldwebel, Oberfeldwebel, Stabsfeldwebel, Hauptfeldwebel)

Actually, this cross is an exact match for our symbol in the protestant boyscouts I wore 30 years ago- throw in the spade and I'm not 100% sure it's a military flag but rather something else entirely? Maybe something pre-RAD with a church connection, I'm afraid I know nothing about non military organisations of that period.

Not much help I know, but a Leichtverwundetensammelplatz would be marked with a red cross to make it easily recognizable and no Feldwebel would be flying a flag like that.

Cheers,

Jens O.
