Great Pic of German POW's in Canada. I have quite a few of these types of photos in my collection. The Canadians allowed the POW's to wear their original uniforms and decorations throughout the war. Bill

Bill, I'm wondering, was this not a common practice in the US then?
Here's a postcard of three friends in Fort Lewis, Washington, 1944-'45. They are still wearing their insignia and awards on their late-war tunics. Note the swastikas have been removed on the negative.
Hardy, I hope you don't mind I'm sharing this in your thread
I already had started a thread on "Show us your German POW photos" and posted most of my POW pics on that thread.
Tim,
When the DAK surrendered in 1943 many of the POW's were sent to the USA and for a time they wore their original uniforms and decorations. This of course varied from POW Camp to POW camp in the USA. As the war went on many of the uniforms disappeared and you see the wear of mostly US uniform items being worn by the POW's...usually dyed a darker color and with PW painted in white on their uniforms. The same thing applied in England and France. Bill
