                Jeremy,
Thank-you very much for showing these. I notice the last one you showed was signed by Barkhorn as Staffelkapitaen of 4/JG52! That is very nice indeed to have Barkhorn's signature.
I have tried to decipher the signature on the earlier awards to Schmidt when he was in 4/JG52 but I cannot work it out. Dieter Baumann was the Staffelkapitaen before Barkhorn but the earlier awards appear to have been signed by the deputy Staffelkapitaen rather than the Staffelkapitaen himself. Any idea of these signatures?

You are very lucky to have such nice award certificates and they are a nice piece of history. Have you seen any of these certificates for aerial victories in the west rather than the east? All the ones I have seen are for victories in the east. I suppose there were many more victories in the east so this makes sense!
                Best regards,
                Andy

                  Thanks Andy,

You are correct about the Barkhorn signature and the comment about Baumann, unfortunately I have not been able determine to whom the signature belongs.

As for victory confirmations for the west I have not seen any however I would imagine the same documents were written up for these as well. Perhaps someone else has some for the west.

                  Cheers

                  Jeremy

Long time ago that this thread was posted but I wanted to thank Andy F-P to acquire me the Aerial Victory Confirmation Certificates from Hauptmann Rudolf Miethig. Together with copies of his award documents.

Rudolf Miethig was born on the 17th of October 1921 in Zwickau am Boberlach (Kreis Deutsch Gabel/ Sudetenland). He volunteered for the Lufwaffe in 1939 and went to Schleswig. After a time in Holland and after his completed training he came to frontservice in Russia as Jagdflieger on the Me 109. He belonged to the I. Gruppe des Jagdgeschwader 53 and was from July 1942 Staffelführer der 3. Staffel.

On 16 October 1942 he shot down his 50th Enemy Aicraft. For shooting down his 50th Enemy Aircraft he was awarded the Ehrenpokal für besondere Leistungen im Luftkrieg on 19 October 1942. On the 29th he was awarded the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes.

On 10th June 1943 at evening Oberleutnant Rudolf Miethig climb one more time into the air and bumped into 3 enemy Russian aircrafts over the Kuban bridgehead, shot one of them down and reached his 101th Kill. This aircraft touched, by going down, the wing of Miethig's Me 109 and Oberleutnant Miethig crashed down together with his Me 109 from 3000 meter in enemy territory (18 kilometers from Krimskaja). He was listed as missing as his wingman could only report his burning aircraft.

Promoted to Hauptmann posthumously (he knew about his promotion). Also the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold was him awarded posthumously.
