Hi Chris,
I guess an SS EK2 is somewhere around 150 to 200 euros, (depending on unit & signer, as this one appears to be in nice condition) and the Finnish documents, no idea. I'd guess they'd be more expensive than normal, just because they are to an SS guy. (Which is why I don't collect SS stuff, just too expensive)

I thought the Finnish docs would be nice to add to my collection as something different, but obviously your friend made an off-line deal with the seller on German eBay, and the seller ended early.

If he's really your friend, he won't try to hose you on them.

Just had a look through 'Kampf unter dem Nordlicht' (the history of the 6 SS Geb.Div.) and it states that in 1941 only 172 Freiheitsmedaille 1.Kl were awarded to members of the division.

If there are any questions regarding the Finnish decorations awarded, please let me know (PM or email). I have all the award lists of Freedom Crosses and Medals to Germans. I'm currently researching Germans being awarded with Finnish decorations and vice versa.

Hello Chris,

I have no statistics yet, but quite a lot. These were very widely awarded to German units which operated with Finnish units. Nord was one of the units which received these in quantities from 1941 onwards. There are unfortunately no published records or similar on subject, but maybe later. I'm working on it.

Nord was the only W-SS unit to see action in Finland (the 18 SS-pol.Rgt. was in Finland for 6 months or so in '43 but from award docs i've seen it appears that it was placed under Nord)

Again from 'Kampf unter dem Nordlicht'. It states that in 1941 1116 2.kl awards were made and as mentioned 172 1.kl. in 1942 143 2.kl and 20 1.kl

It also quotes 555 EKII being awarded to members of the division including attached units up to the end of 1942

Thanks for the information. I didn't have time to check the German sources, but the numbers must be correct or at least close to it. The first awards of different grades of Freedom Crosses were dated in September 1941 and the last in August 1944. Between these dates several thousands were given to various German units incl. W-SS, of which Nord was the major unit receiving these. 1st and 2nd Class Medals were usually awarded to enlisted men and NCOs while officers received crosses. There are many famous names among the lists.

Many, many times, the good stuff suddenly disappears well before closing date. 99% of the time, it is because of deals done using the handy Ebay feature "send seller message" !!
