Nice portrait..with a twist?

Hello,
picked up this fine study of a Gefreiter wearing his M36 over the weekend.
There are two things of note..firstly our man seems to be wearing Feldgrau slip-ons to conceal his unit number.
Plus, he does not seem to have a national emblem on his side cap. Soutache and cocade, yes...eagle no.
I've looked under magnification, and there is the suggestion of the ghost of an outline of an eagle, almost as if one had been removed.

Looks as he wear the slip on straps reversed, also the chevron looks like being in feldgrau back instead of green one.
