    2nd Battalion/Grenadier Regt. 511

Was part of the 293 Infantry Division - I believe. Was in Belgium, France then straight to the Russian Front for the rest of the war.

Actually it means the 2 company of Grenadier Regiment 511 (part of the 1st Btl.)

if it was the 2nd battalion it would read II./G.R.511
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

I beg to differ (however slightly).

A latin "2" usually denotes the second company of a regiment. Second battalion would be indicated by using a roman numeral, ie. II./G.R. 511.

BTW, the unit named "Grenadier-Regiment 511" existed only from 15/10/1942 to 15/11/1943. An overview of Inf.Div. 293 can be found here.

          Hope this helps a bit!
