Hi could someone please tell me whether I'm right in thinking that the German rank abreviation Ogfr is corporal? Thankyou.

Obergefreiter is sometimes equated to the British rank of corporal but it's difficult to make direct comparisons with some ranks as both armies systems are different. It can also be equated to unteroffizier.
The ranks up to stabsgefreiter are regarded as ranks of the private soldier, not a Non-comissioned officer. An obergefreiter might not have much in the way of command responsibility for example, in fact he could quite easily be doing the same job as an ordinary schütze. In the British army however a corporal is a Non-Commissioned officer and will have some form of junior command responsibility, a section commander in the infantry, a detachment commander in the artillery, that sort of thing.
I think 'Uniforms and traditions of the German army' does a pretty good job of translating the various ranks. It refers to an obergefreiter as a Senior Private First Class.Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.
