How to Determine Unit from Location/Timeframe

    Hello:

I am looking at how to determine which Kriegsmarine marine artillery unit was assigned to the town of Montecatini Terme (commonly called Montec) in the Tuscany region of Italy in March 1944.

Any clues or guidance as to how to determine the unit would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance!

    Hi Joe,

I see nothing about M.A.A. units stationed in Montecatini Terme in my references. Could it have been another location?

      M.A.A. 619 - Genua

M.A.A. 616 - Elba and later La Spezia

      M.A.A. 622 - La Spezia

...probably one of these. These are the only Marineartillerieabteilungen that Hildebrand lists as being stationed anywhere near Montecatini Terme.

        Thanks For the Info

        Rick:

The photos are certainly in Montecatini Terme. I matched some present day tourist sites to the background in several of the photos.

In one photo. the Oberleutnant zur See (former Obermachinist aboard HSK Thor) is holding an equipment and personnel inspection and I have identified the nearby building as the Montecatini Terme townhall.

I was hoping to nail down the actual unit designation. Perhaps they were just passing through (?)
