German Iron & K Rations - Original Pictures needed!

    Gents,

I have been trying to create my own ration labels (non-profit) for use within the unit I am part of (www.916gr.co.uk) and am wondering whether anyone has any pictures of German Iron and K Rations? Whilst there are many for sale on the internet and plenty of repro labels that are kindly made available for download. However, I have seen very little photographic evidence, if any at all, or other sources to support the design of some of these labels and particularly those that are for sale. Any images or information on where best to find such photographs would be much appreciated.

    Best,
    Simon

I think all of the iron ration items I have seen offered for use in reenacting are fantasy items. I saw many years ago an original part of an iron ration brought back by a vet and it was a flat looking can (looked the size and shape of the bakelite butter dish only a little smaller) that had was a mix of really high-fat meat products inside. The only other time I ever saw anything that looked like this was on the History channel about the Germans fighting on the eastern front and what caused the greatest number of German deaths not the russians but malnutrition. This History channel episode showed the new iron ration that was developed to counteract the this problem. It was a really interesting show and the iron ration can depicted looked just like what I saw years ago. If you find out anything please post you findings as I would love to make some correct iron rations for my unit.
    Best,
    Greg

      Simon & Greg,

Have you done a search of the forum for rations??? If you go to the Equipment forum and type in Rations it will pull up those threads that have German ration items to include those who collect such items you will also find them on the collections thread. Bill

Get yourself on www.panzergrenadier.net - then look for a member called Botty. AFRA are already issuing period rations in ration bags and have been now for the past 4 months. I'm sure our man can send you some templates.

                Hi Adam

Yes, as you know, AFRA dont do things half heartedly. Our man Mark spent a long time researching these items. Another thing to consider is that by 44 boxed rations like the photos below came harder and harder to source, these were official iron ration boxes, the more common iron rations were the required foods prepared at your local field kitchen and handed out to troops when needed. This was due to shortages of food etc and because the iron rations were only to be eaten A) When no other food from a field kitchen could be found B) When men had been in combat for 2-3 days in the front lines - thus it was hard to get them food from the field kitchen.

Lexikon der wehrmacht has a nice article for you to read (I hope you can read German mate )
