Color slides

Today my best friend sent me a package filled with color slides. I have checked only part of it, here are a couple.

    1. The photographer himself

    2. Anybody can identify the location?

    3. A general and officers, two in white tunic

    Hello Akira!

The General pictured is Generaloberst Heinz Guderian. Given the presence of the LW officer and the 2 officers in white tunics, I would hazard a guess that the pic was taken when he was Chief of the General Staff.

    Regards,

    VJK

Thanks VJK. The moire on the photo, which makes the photo ugly, can be eliminated if I remount the slide (glass mount problem)... The problem is whether I should do it or not...

          Very, very nice.

With careful re-scanning and with a pass through something like Adobe Photoshop, you should be able to restore the image quality very nicely.

The signs look like Poilish to me, or some other non-Cyrillic Eastern European language, though I'd rather hear from experts here.

Late summer 1940? Guderian's rank and Ritterkreuz, white tunics....

Can't really see enough text on the signs: Slovak?

              Hi Akira,

The distortion comes from the glass panes in the slide. You can get a clean scan by taking the film from the slide, scanning it, and then replacing it back in the slide. I usually only do this for the color slides that I really want a good image of. Otherwise, I just scan them like you have and touch them up in Photoshop with the airbrush tools. Nice ones you have!

              Regards,

              Rick

P.S. The second photo is almost certainly Yugoslavia (Croatia) - see "Slavonska" on the building...

...part of that little foray of Hitler's that most probably cost him Moscow.

                Regards,

                Rick

These are great photos! Are they unique, or part of a then published series?
                  Great stuff.

Rick, I will take out the positive out of glass mount when making publication off it, then the beautiful scans can be done professionally. Jeff, because these came from a Bildberichter's estate, it is possible that some of them were published during the war.

                    A couple of more photos:

                    4. An artillery soldier

                    5. Civilians in Balkan

                    6. Sunset in the east

                      Hi Akira,

Great images! There is nothing like seeing the war in color. It makes the events and people seem much more "real."

I have been meaning to post a few color slides as well. Maybe I will start an additional thread...

I always like seeing your collection.

                      Regards,

                      Rick

                          Akira,

What scanner do you use to scan slides? I use a Canon CanoscanD1250 U2F. It was the only one I found that could take the old German slides.

Mine is EPSON GT-9300UF, but that's a Japanese designation, and I do not know what they call it in US/Europe. Looking at epson.com, it looks like something like Perfection 2450, the price was similar.

10+ slides had broken glasses, so I bought new glass mounts to replace them (for purists this may be unacceptable behaviour but I have to avoid further injury on film..).

Glass mounts these days utilize anti-newton glasses, so no more rainbows on scans, like this:
