    Officer Identity?

    Hi

I was wondering if anybody recognises the officer in this picture.

His shoulder boards are covered, first time I have seen this. I am assuming to prevent sniper attack.

    Cheers

The officer in this picture is Generalmajor Walter "Papa" Hoernlein who was the first commander of the Grossdeutschland Division. If you have the book "God, Honor, Fatherland: A Photo History of Panzergrenadier Division Grossdeutschland on the Eastern Front 1942-1944" by Thomas McGuirl/Remy Spezzano (ISBN 0-9657584-0-0), turn to page 12 for more info on "Papa" Hoernlein. Hoernlein was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 30.7.1941 as commander of I.R. 80. He became the 213th soldier to be awarded the Eichenlaub on 15.3.1943 in recognition of Grossdeutschland's role in the defensive battles around Kharkov. I believe the photo you posted shows Hoernlein before he became a General. If you look closely at the goggles, you can barely make out his Knight's Cross. Check out page 12 of the book I mentioned and you will see two pictures that were probably taken around the same time as this one.

      Hi

Thanks, I had an idea it might be him after a web search. I have another front on shot of him taken just before this as he is leaving a building wearing his Knight's Cross.

I do not have the book you mention. I would be interested to see these photos. Would someone be willing to scan them?

      Cheers
