Thankyou, gentlemen. I'll get used to the old style font eventually.

I believe it says "Corporal of the Landwehr" (der Landwehr). Unterofficer was/is a generic term for NCOs but also a specific rank.
signed by Lt. of the Landwehr "Baum".
Interesting and nice. I think it also says "A.K." (7th army corps?)
Please forward the date to Chris Boonzair as he is collecting dates of EK2 awards.

Be happy to, Jeff. How do I find him? A search of this site produced mostly quotes from you suggesting this to others.

The photo I supplied here appears washed out due to my trying to get it's file size down. The original shot is much clearer.

            later,

            Jeff G

              hi,
they were fighting on the Somme near thiepval.

The Snaitäts Komp. was a Korps troop with men attached to the 16. I.D. during the fighting.

                Hey Chris,

I went back to the original. It was only then I noticed this faint stamp in the bottom right corner. My one year of German in grade 9, 40 years ago, leaves me to believe it says King of Prussia (Konig?ch Preussicshe) or close to that and maybe something about the korp at the bottom (Something or other ...meekorps perhaps?

Here is a clearer view of the names.

If you would like an original copy for your files, simply PM me and I'd be delighted to supply one. The originals are a hefty 1600 X 1200.

                thanks,

                Jeff

                  Hi,
A big sized scan would be just the thing.

                  Thanks
                  Chris
